Baking Impossible

  • Released: 6 October 2021, On Netflix
We all learn something new every day. And this week we learned a new word "Bakineers". Bakers being engineers and engineers being bakers. 6 episodes of season 1 of Baking Impossible (hopefully this is not the only one) were released on Wednesday. The next couple of episodes will be released on 13th October. Baking Impossible is a marriage between baking and everything science and engineering. There are 9 teams. Each team has one baker and one engineer. The teams are given challenges that test their baking skills as well as their engineering techniques. Their cakes have to undergo stress tests designed by the judges. At the end of each round, the team scoring the lowest is eliminated. The last remaining team will split $100,000 and the title of " Bakineers". There are three judges; Joanne Chang the Chef, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi who is a rocket scientist (I am not joking) judging the engineering aspect of the cakes, and Andrew Smyth, the OG Bakineer. The tasks get tougher with every stage with the stress tests getting harder. In the first episode, the contestants have to make a ship out of cake. They use everything from Rice Krispie Treats to something novel called dead dough (because there is no yeast in it duh!). Some of those ships sink, some float and some actually manage to float through the entire stress test. In the successive episodes, they have to build a cake robot, a cake miniature golf course, a chain reaction, cake dresses for the runway, and cake skyscrapers no less than 5 feet that have to endure earth-quaking tremors for 10 minutes! Baking Impossible takes the words baking and impossible to whole new levels. But the best part is that the cakes that do not pass the stress test are not written off, they are still judged based on taste, presentation, and the effort of the team. ( Though I am still wondering about what happens to the rest of the cakes that survive the stress test) Hosted by Justin Willman and each episode lasting a good 40 minutes Baking Impossible is a delight for all of your senses. It is funny, sweet, innovative, and even manages to get your heart rates up during those stress tests. Overall, if you are a fan of cooking shows and science do not miss this one. It is a mouthwatering feat, watching Baking Impossible! By SB
