Midnight Mass's release on Netflix made for a spooky Friday. Mike Flanagan with amazing series and movies like Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Doctor Sleep, Hush comes with another spectacular series, Midnight Mass. Set in a sleepy(already looks demented) town of Crockett, Midnight Mass starts with the arrival of Riley. Crockett a fishing community is suffering from an oil spill and has a population of less than 150. Riley has finished his term in prison for causing the death of a young girl while driving under the influence of alcohol. His return has coincided with the arrival of Father Paul, who has come as a substitute for the previous pastor (Nobody knows where he went or why he has not come back). Riley is welcomed with open arms by his mother but met with lukewarm enthusiasm by his father. He also meets his high school sweetheart, Erin who is a teacher at the local school. Crockett is a highly religious community. Thus every person who has grown up in the town attends the Church regularly. This brings to light Riley's struggle with faith. He has lost his belief in God after the accident and has adapted to atheism ever since. Thus with this as the backdrop, we begin the story of Crockett. Once Riley has settled in there are strange occurrences. Cats wash up dead on the shore. Riley spots strange apparitions in the night. he also starts attending AA with Father Paul where he is met with conflicting arguments where Father Paul says religion and alcohol are just objects, and it depends on the people how they use it, which is true, but I am not entirely sure if it is the right thing to be said to a recovering alcoholic. The mildly religious town turns full-on fanatic when Father Paul performs one miracle after another. Healing a paralyzed girl, coming back from the dead to name a few. But these miracles come at a price. Is the new Pastor their saviour or the one who will bring doom to the town? Will Riley overcome his inhibitions about religion? What is in store for this town? On the outside, these might be the questions that the town of Crockett and its inhabitants have to answer but reading between the lines Midnight Mass is much more than that. It is about finding healing and trust in faith. In one's religion. It is about addiction and how that affects many lives. Even though Midnight Mass uses religion and horror as the genre this is much more personal and emotional which is no surprise coming from a brilliant Mike Flanagan. At a little more than 7 hours, this series will scare you and might even scar you long after the credits have rolled. By SB
