TOP TEN NETFLIX SHOWS THIS WEEK

By Rashmi Goel

Netflix has a reputation for being stingy with its data. There's been a hard time gauging if what a director or showrunner has put out into the world is reaching its intended audience. Now that Netflix has introduced its Top 10, get a glimpse behind the curtain at least. The Netflix daily Top 10 Most Popular shows an omnivorous appetite among Netflix faithful, from reality shows to prestige TV, animated kids shows to docu-series of every stripe. The most popular TV shows and movies on Netflix for this week are listed below.

Anatomy of a Scandal

Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan, Anatomy of a Scandal is a British anthology drama streaming television miniseries developed by David E. Kelley and Melissa James Gibson.Netflix premiered the series on 15 April 2022, and it consists of six episodes. Anatomy of a Scandal is the perfect Netflix show in many ways. With its stellar cast and well-known co-creator, it's a quick binge and it could even have said something meaningful if it weren't so thinly drawn. However well-acted, it's a paint-by-numbers thriller that ostensibly probes the nature of sexual consent without really engaging us in any of the characters' lives. Adapted from Sarah Vaughan's novel of the same name, we mostly follow Sophie Whitehouse (Sienna Miller), whose world is turned upside down when her handsome and successful politician husband, James (Rupert Friend), comes clean about an affair he's had with a young administrative assistant. Then another bombshell drops: the woman he had an affair with, Olivia (Naomi Scott), has accused James of rape. As the title suggests, Anatomy of a Scandal starts off by talking about consent, but then moves on to talking about privilege. There isn't much to upset anyone, but enough to get you thinking briefly about the general injustice of it all. Although the cast is genuinely good, the formula can be easily whipped up, and enough breadcrumbs are laid out for it to seem like it's going somewhere interesting, ultimately the show just... exists. Beautiful, rich people frown and fret and agree that justice is rarely delivered in cases of sexual assault (save one). Several characters should have gotten more. However, the tone of Anatomy of a Scandal isn't tuned to that.

The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On

Netflix's scandalous relationship shows have brought trashy reality TV to a whole new level, and The Ultimatim: Marry or Move On may be the best of the bunch. In this show hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, couples decide they want to marry, but perhaps not with the person they came with. There are six couples on the verge of getting married. The partners are unsure whether they want to marry each other or not. A deadline of nine weeks has been imposed on them, or they will be forced to separate. As a result, each couple chooses a potential partner from one of the other couples, giving them an opportunity to look at the future from two different perspectives.

Bridgerton

Netflix released the second season of Bridgerton on March 25, 2022. In Bridgerton, Netflix adapts a set of romance novels for a lush, swoony adaptation. As the series begins, a London family of eight consists of five (or six?) children who are all of marrying age, and whom duty, desire, and scandal collide when Viscount Anthony Bridgerton sets his heart on marriage, only to be met by his intended bride's headstrong big sister. Second season of Bridgerton, created by Shondaland and Chris Van Dusen, follows Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, the oldest Bridgerton brother, as he looks for a family. Following several failed attempts, Anthony is driven to find a debutante who meets his impossible standards until Kate and her younger sister arrive from India. In the course of watching Anthony court Edwina, Kate discovers that his true intentions are not to find a true love match - and decides to stop him at all costs. Nevertheless, Kate and Anthony's verbal sparring matches only bring them closer together, complicating matters for both parties. The Featheringtons, across Grosvenor Square, make way for the newest member of the Featherington family, while Penelope navigates the ton while hiding her deepest secret from her closest loved ones. This romantic, scandalous, and clever series celebrates the timeless values of enduring friendships, families finding their way, and the search for a love that overcomes all. Julia Quinn's novels inspired the series.

Choose or Die

Toby Meakins directs the feature directorial debut of Choose or Die, a 2022 British horror thriller film. Asa Butterfield, Iola Evans, Eddie Marsan, and Robert Englund star in the film. "Choose or Die," Netflix's latest supernatural horror film, is a weird combination, with an interesting premise about a video game killing people, but one that only deteriorates with time to an ultimately disappointing and laughable conclusion. There is a story about an aspiring programmer and college student, Kayla, who stumbles upon unclaimed prize money in an old text-based video game from the 1980s and decides to play it. Apart from its premise and the inevitable disappointment, "Choose or Die" is a forgettable film, even if you are specifically into the technology horror genre.

Better Call Saul

The Emmy-nominated prequel to Breaking Bad follows Jimmy McGill as he transforms into sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman. Breaking Bad introduced Bob Odenkirk, who played sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, towards the end of the second season, which was a bit of a surprise to all those who had long admired his work as a writer and comic actor on shows like SNL and Mr. Show. There was no way they could have imagined that this was simply the beginning of a tragic and hilarious tale that would soon take on the scope of an epic Russian novel. Vince Gilligan's prequel to his meth drama has achieved the nearly impossible, expanding upon the source material of Breaking Bad with a dynamic, sometimes heartbreaking result. The film further illustrates how shaky a person's morality can be, especially when huge amounts of money are involved, and Odenkirk (and his co-stars Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, and Jonathan Banks) do a fantastic job portraying that.

Pastor Cal, Dr. Pepper, and Dr. Viviana Coles are at the helm of this dynamic social experiment, which gives couples access to professional guidance along with support from others - even if that support comes in the form of tough love. As each couple embarks on their emotional journey, from wedding to honeymoon, early nesting and dealing with the challenges of daily life in a new marriage, a new two-hour episode will be aired every two weeks. Couples who have been matched will also be able to meet and share good, bad, and ugly about their unique unions. While cleaning up a murder site, he discovers that the crime was never reported to the police, and he has unwittingly covered up a murder. John Norcut was the husband of Ana (Eva Mendes), and Eddie (Ed Harris) killed him, not because the ledger would have exposed police corruption. Eddie had an affair with Ana and discovered that she was pregnant. In order to hide her miscarriage from Eddie, Ana (who was unable to have children and didn't want any) lied to him about having miscarried. After he confronted John, Eddie killed him in a rage believing that he had forced her to abort the child. Eddie sets up Tom Culter (Samuel L. Jackson) to clean up the crime scene, and he tries to set a trap with Det. Vargas (Luis Guzman), but he goes to his daughter Rose's (Keke Palmer) apartment to reveal the truth. When Eddie realized the police were outside, he pulled a gun and was about to pull the trigger when he was shot by Rose. The ledger John had was given to Tom and Det. Vargas with the understanding that it would be best if it was disposed of. It is Tom's turn to comfort his daughter. The last time Ana is seen, she is crying, thinking of how many families she could have had with Eddie if she had been more honest. Finally, Miguel cleans Tom's apartment and removes Eddie's blood from the carpet
